Springfield officials were in the dark about the possibility of a large immigrant relocation to the area, Mayor Rob Rue said at the recent Springfield City Commission meeting, but a “network of businesses knew what was coming.”
Investigation by the city’s Immigrant Accountability Response Team formed in October of 2023 has revealed the possibility “there were companies that knew they were going to make an effort to bring in individuals who were crossing the border based on federal regulations that they could do that,” Rue said. “I’m upset at the fact we didn’t get a chance to have an infrastructure in place if there were going to be 20,000 more people from 2020 to 2025. We didn’t get to do that.”
If they had known what to expect, he said, the city would have taken steps to “hire 25 more police officers and 25 firefighters … along with making sure individuals already living here and faithfully paying rent would not be displaced because of the greed of landlords. We would have been ahead of that or tried to combat it … we did not get to do that.”
Another conversation at the commission session centered on housing affordability and the housing shortfall that has been driving up rents, often resulting in the eviction of long-time tenants who can no longer afford to stay in their homes.
City officials shared the frustration expressed by residents about the increasing ownership of housing by Limited Liability Corporations (LLCs) from outside the community. Rue said the city is looking into what options might be available to address the problems created by LLC ownership of properties in the city.
Commissioner Bridget Houston indicated her recent exploration of the issue revealed one of five property purchases in the country is now by an LLC for investment purposes.

Ramaswamy is a monotheistic Hindu.[21] According to relatives, he is fluent in Tamil[144][145] and understands (but does not speak) Malayalam.[145] He is a vegetarian and wrote in 2020, "I believe it is wrong to kill sentient animals for culinary pleasure".[27][74][146]

Vivek walks the tightrope.
It’s a delicate act for ambitious Republicans like Ramaswamy. The biotech entrepreneur has been floated as a potential contender for secretary of Homeland Security if Trump wins the presidential election, and he has a vested interest in currying favor with the former president. But as an Ohio politician who has suggested he might run for governor or senator, he also still needs to preserve some credibility in a state where even prominent Republicans have rebuked Trump for spreading false claims about migrants. If Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, win the election, Gov. Mike DeWine, who called the urban legends about Haitian migrants “garbage that was not true,” would pick Vance’s successor.

That this could be happening wouldn't surprise me at all. There was a hint of it in what the town's mayor said:

I’m the Governor of Ohio. I don’t recognize the Springfield that Trump and Vance describe.

The City of Springfield, Ohio filed a civil lawsuit against a neo-Nazi group, alleging that members of the organization started a campaign to harass and silence residents who supported the Haitian community.
Springfield Mayor Rob Rue, Asst. Mayor Dr. David Estrop, City Commissioners Krystal Brown and Tracey Tackett, and four other residents filed the lawsuit Feb. 4 in Ohio’s Southern District Court in Dayton against the Blood Tribe, founded by Christopher Pohlhaus and co-led by Drake Berentz.
The eight plaintiffs claim that the group interfered with their civil rights, created a public nuisance, violated Ohio laws on telecommunications harassment, ethnic intimidation, menacing and inciting violence, and intentionally inflicted emotional distress through hate-based conduct.
The complaint says the Blood Tribe sent suspicious packages that looked like bombs to the plaintiffs’ homes, left “harassing” voicemails, sent hateful emails, used dating platforms to “send men looking for drugs and sex to their homes late at night,” published their personal information online, and encouraged others to harass them as well.
According to the document, the organization began its “hit” on the City of Springfield in July 2024 in an effort to stop the “invasion” of Haitian migrants.
“Though the vast majority of the immigrants lawfully reside in the United States, and had been welcomed by the City, the Blood Tribe insisted that Haitians who settled in Springfield threatened ‘the good White residents’ of Springfield,” the lawsuit reads.
And Trump apologists back then were like “at least people are talking about immigration issues”.
Still pisses me off.
