The LCBO is the government controlled company that sells alcohol here. While we do have alcohol available in some grocery stores and some convenience stores, ALL of it is purchased through the LCBO. That’s the rules. Which makes the LCBO one of the largest purchasers of alcohol in the world.

Today Doug Ford (premiere of Ontario) ordered the immediate removal of all US products from LCBO shelves. Like LCBO employees were literally boxing it up today.

He’s also chummy with the head of one of the biggest grocery retailers in Ontario, who has started a huge ad campaign about buying Canadian. I’ll be interested to see if some American products start disappearing from the shelves. In some ways, it could be good for some smaller Canadian producers as they may be able to get some shelf space.

Canadians are worried but also… our patriotism is coming out. We definitely have big brother syndrome with having the US as a neighbour so our defining characteristic in how we think of ourselves is often “not American”. In this case, that works in our favour as everyone is mad but also banding together.

@dolmansaxlil The liquor disappearing from store shelves was shown during the (lead) story on the US national news tonight. They also mentioned groceries.

And apparently the Canadian CEO of Shopify made some remarks that didn’t sit well with your fellow countrymen.

Very glad I switched to burning wood (locally sourced) about 4 or 5 years ago. Home heating oil is NH's biggest import from Canada.

Tariffs on hold, at least for Canada and Mexico.

Headlines saying that Canada agreed to a deal. Trump taking credit. One little problem. Canada announced what they were going to do back in December, before Trump took office. He didn’t pressure them into anything.

            Note the date:

Trudeau mentioned the plan during his news conference on Saturday....

Airline travel between Canada and the US is “collapsing” amid Donald Trump’s tariff war, with flight bookings between the two countries down by over 70%, newly released data suggests.

According to data from the aviation analytics company OAG, airline capacity between Canada and the US has been reduced through October 2025, with the biggest cuts occurring between the months of July and August, which is considered peak travel season. Passenger bookings on Canada to US routes are currently down by over 70% compared to the same period last year.

I have a Canadian student in one of my classes. She came in today emblazoned in a red "Liberals" shirt. This one, in fact. She had been home in Ontario during the Liberal Party convention, paid her membership fee, and attended, voting for Carney. She said she attracted some TV coverage because she was up front, and rather younger than the average convention goer! 🙂

So, I decided to get the same tee, and I might wear it to class!

I had no plans of voting Liberal in the upcoming election (I was going to vote NDP, which is left of Liberal). My son and his girlfriend were also going to vote NDP. We all feel that the party was going to move a bit to the right after Trudeau’s departure. But given the current circumstances, all three of us will now vote Liberal. We feel that Carney - a person who none of us would have previously aligned with - is the right person for this moment. So the Liberals are getting voters from both the right and the left.

Carney was smart to call the election. He’s following Doug Ford’s playbook, taking advantage of the Elbows Up sentiment, rather than waiting until the fall (which is when the election was going to happen).
