The 2024 Paris Olympic medals are flaking and falling apart, many medalists have complaint and filed for replacements. The IOC so day says they will replace the medals.
The sponsor and notable luxury goods company LVMH that designed the medals has so far been keeping quiet and letting the French mint that manufactured the medals take the heat instead. The mint blames the varnish on the medals as "defective", saying the varnish's proprietary formula was tweaked to comply with certain EU regulation that banned chromium trioxide, a chemical used to prevent oxidation.
