Customizing your user profile and settings
-
There are lots of user profile and setting options available on the Nodebb platform that allow you to customize how you use and interact with the forum. Thought I'd post a few tips that I've found useful. Please add yours. And I'll add a link to this thread in the Tips and Tricks thread, so that everyone can reference it in the future.
Avatar and signature line.
As with groupee, you can set your avatar and signature line to be whatever you want them to be. The default for the avatar is a colored circle with the first letter of your user name.
Just click on your avatar and select Edit Profile. You'll see other options in addition to the two I've mentioned.
I'll be adding more posts to this thread. If you have any user profile and/or setting tips, please feel free to add them here!

Notifications
There are lots of notifications you can customize in the Settings area of your User profile. The forum software is set up with a bunch of Notification defaults; you can modify those as you wish.
If you click on your avatar you'll get a dropdown with a bunch of options. Click on Settings.
I like to know if I've been mentioned in a post or when I have a Chat (PM in our old parlance). I've set things up so that I get a notification when a) "When someone mentions you" and b) "When you receive a chat message".
For a), this means if someone references you with @username (in my case, @wtg), I'll get a notification that someone is talking about/to me! The notification shows up as a number next to the little bell icon on the right side of my screen. It's the same functionality as the flashing "New PM!" thingy on groupee.
I also try to use the @username feature in my posts so that if someone has notifications set up in their username profile the way I do, they'll know that the discussion might be of interest to them. I think this feature is especially useful for those members who might not check in frequently, or who might not happen to a read a topic where they are mentioned. You can set up to get a notification here on the forum, via email, both, or neither.

If you are using features on Nodebb that you find really useful, please feel free to start additional threads and add a link to Tips and Tricks! I plan to do some other threads on How to Post (full screen vs Quick reply) and Skins, if no one else does them first.
Also, if you have questions about how to do anything, please start a thread with those, and we can pool our collective knowledge, and add that information to Tips and Tricks, too.
