I love eating with the seasons, and of course autumn crops include potatoes (which I harvested from my garden a few weeks ago) and....winter squash!!! Our local grocery stores have all kinds of different squash on sale right now. They take up a lot of garden space so I don't grow them myself.

My recent haul included delicata, kabocha, and buttercup (the one that's already been roasted and partially devoured - it is absolutely delicious!). The kabocha and buttercup are enormous.

I also bought something called a Sweet Dumpling, which is the size and shape of an acorn squash but whose skin has the mottling of a delicata.

Waiting for stalks of Brussels sprouts, another fall fave, to show up at Trader Joe's.

We also like winter squashes a lot.

My wife really is not fond of most summer squash, so she welcomes this season.

Making Apple Cider Chicken with Apples and Parsnips tonight.

We went to Irons Fruit Farm this week to pick up fresh cider and their incredible cider donuts. Irons was my first job, around 12 years old, digging potatoes. Love the place. I took my kid there regularly to see their menagerie.

Too bad. It did look promising. I may try Normandy Chicken instead; it has a lot of the same autumnal ingredients. I had it a friend's house when I was in England in the mid-80s. He was one of my colleagues who worked in our London office and he chauffeured me and my Mom around one weekend, including a dinner at his home with his family. His wife made Normandy Chicken, and also a trifle, both of which were to die for. I have both recipes somewhere, but here is Mary Berry's version of the chicken:

The parsnips were not a good match.
