        Of course, the problem with this is the thieves might not be caught, the pieces might be disassembled, and the stones might be recut and sold.

        This is a not only a theft but a crime against culture.

        I have an almost viscerally negative reaction when invaluable and irreplaceable cultural artifacts meet such a fate.

          BTW, I changed my mind about the issue of repatriation of stolen artifacts. My previous opinion was parochial and plain wrong.
