Magnificent Beast!

It’s a Weber S-650 gas grill with infrared rotisserie burner. Built 2007. New cost today is about $4000. I’d never pay that, but when I found this one at a hotel liquidation place for a couple $hundy I snapped it up.
It’s fun to work on! Built like a tank - a restaurant grill. Wasn’t used much and stored indoors so there isn’t much rust. Been cleaning it on and off over the last few days.

Used a new cleaner that really surprised me -Weimans Stove and Oven Cleaner. I’ve only seen it at discount places like TJ Maxx so can only hope it continues to be available.
It’s not nearly as caustic as Easy Off and works much better. Spray on, let sit, wipe off. No fumes. Doesn’t seem to affect stainless steel, chrome, concrete, or paint. Worked great on the the hard, burnt on bits you can see on the front.
Also used this stuff:

Again a very impressive product. I tried it on the fridge in the house and it looks great! No polishing.

Now it’s time to attack the mechanical bits. The cool little LED lights on the handle are toast - the batteries leaked and destroyed the circuit boards. Weber replacements are no longer available but I can get similar one aftermarket for some $40 each. They’re fun but not worth that to me.

It’s set up for natural gas. I don’t have a gas line in the back yard and I need to convert it to propane. I’ve done this on other grills and it’s pretty straightforward. Not so this one, at least not according to the folks on the Weber Grill Forum. (Yes it’s a thing. Of course it is. Those guys do grills like PF does sand cast frames.)

Weber doesn’t sell a conversion kit, and many on the board say it’s because a conversion kit won’t work on these. Others disagree. Hilarity ensues! Kits are available on Amazon but they’re held in very low regard - like drop-action spinets. A proper conversion requires a new “manifold” - the part with the knobs - that costs roughly twice what I paid for the whole grill. Being as I rarely grill these days - don’t even eat much meat - I hesitate to spend that much.
May try a kit and see what happens. I’ve been been warned to keep a fire extinguisher handy and not to wear hair gel.
Good times!

I love your projects!
Does Kim's new house have a gas line out to her backyard? Easy to have one installed? Could be the perfect housewarming present....

@wtg
Current plan is to give Kim the perfectly good Monument grill I currently have. It works fine - but it’s not nearly as magnificent!Running a gas line to my patio is possible but now is not the time to start such a project. I think I’ll wait for Spring, try it on propane, and see how it goes.
I’ve been warned to stock up on propane canisters. If you run it full-out it’s going to go through them quickly.
