Electric Roaster

This crazy thing:

Mom had one but she never used it because she had a double oven . I bought one to do the roast for the family gathering while the sides get crisped up in the kitchen oven. So far I’m not impressed and will probably return it. Good thing I gave it a test run first.
It will reach set point temp -eventually -with nothing in it, but once I put in the chicken it never reached 350F again, much less the 400 degrees called for to crisp the skin. It’s 1440 watts - the same as the professional models. It should come to temp. People cook 25 pound turkeys in these, or at least they say they do.
Chicken was edible, but looked terrible.
Maybe it’s defective? Maybe I’m better off with a big countertop oven in the basement? Or just buy a second electric range, put it in the basement and move on? I’ve found them used for like $100.
Any experience to share?

Never tried one. Now I never will. But. Have a double oven stove and will never cook anything as big as a turkey again.
We had a double oven freestanding range at the lake. Burned everything, failed twice at $500 a pop and I replaced it. Wild temp swings. 5 YO Samsung. No more Samsungs for us.
Mom’s was an old school 1960’s dual wall oven setup. Gaffers and Sattler, doncha know. Builders grade. Worked flawlessly for nearly 50 years.
