People don't actually die of measles. They generally die from pneumonia, which is a complication that can arise. Less common is measles -induced encephalitis, which can cause serious cognitive impairment, deafness, and death.

Canada’s new PMI like Carney. He's showing more spine than the US Congress. Check out his interview with Jon Stewart.

Canada is not the United StatesI go back and forth to BC often. There's been no discernible change crossing the border north into Canada, but returning is quite chilly. Whereas in previous crossings there was typically a very brief exchange ("why were you there, anything to declare") it's now a more extensive set of questions, even to the point of asking to see passports (I have a Nexus - trusted traveler card that should bypass all of this). The grocery stores and liquor stores are reflecting the tariffs, even before they went into effect. I'll be curious to see what things look like now that the tarrifs are here. Most stores I've seen are proudly marking their stock as coming from Canada.

USAID programs that were cancelled"Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett siding with the liberal justices." Maybe a glimmer of hope?
The fact that the vote was even close on what is obviously an illegal move by the president is astounding.

25 most influential cookbooksI was surprised that so many of the ones I have that I thought were "obscure" made the list. I was also surprised that so many of them are decades old.
My list:- Joy of Cooking
- Mastering the Art -- tbh, I just donated these volumes as I rarely use them and can get things online
- A Book of Middle Eastern Food - just great
- Moosewood - I have it but I rarely use it. I found the recipes to be bland, but often used them as a starting point
- Jerusalem - I love this. I haven't found a bad recipe yet, and the photos are food porn.
- The Cuisines of Mexico - another oldie but goodie
- Diet for a Small Planet - I married into this one
I'm intrigued by the Jaffrey "An Invitation to Indian Cooking" book. Does anyone have it, and do you like it?

Le Creuset vs. Other enamelled cast iron?I've had LCs fail or crackle. They can't really withstand super high great, apparently. Plus they're so freaking heavy! I currently have one largish casserole and one small saucepan, and that's enough.

GazaI'm not reading the details of anything he says or proposes, but I am curious. Where does he think the Palestinians will be resettled to?

Contingency planning@wtg I love hearing owls! We had a nest right next to one of our houses in Phoenix, and they hooted away every night. We also had no rats or mice. Just javelina.

Contingency planningI just changed my email here from my "junk" email to a real one that I actually monitor.

Cottage cheese has a resurgence. Apparently.I've always loved cottage cheese. A big treat as a kid was cottage cheese and pears - canned, of course!

It’s only January 2I'm glad to hear Tesla cooperated with the FBI, but shouldn't these announcements come from the FBI and not President Musk?

Words you don’t hear much these daysChiapet? Is that even a word?
I've been known to use salad days, but I never knew it was from Shakespeare.
I'd never heard the term "bespoke" in the US, but it seems to be slowly working it's way into everyday speech here.Another word I recently used in a text was "addlepated " I just think those kinds of terms are fun!
