Why do we treat the elderly this way?

My father had it easier than most. He had a heart attack in his own house on a random day and it was over.
I'd like to die like he did, or in in-patient hospice care, or according to a death with dignity law.
The way these elderly people are being treated is the opposite of what I want to happen to me.
The way our society treats the sick, elderly, and poor is very, very sad.
