Renowned as the "master of suspense", in 1964 Alfred Hitchcock told the BBC why it was his skill at playing with the audience's emotions and expectations that kept them glued to the screen.
I remember when I saw Psycho. I was in college, and the movie was being shown in the dorm cafeteria. I was sitting on a windowsill where the window behind me was open. Remember the scene where the cop looks into the car where Janet Leigh has fallen asleep after having stolen the money?
When his face flashed up on the screen, filling the entire frame, it completely startled me and I lurched backwards, almost falling out of the window. I was lucky on two fronts: There was a screen in the window and it was on the lower level of the building, so I wouldn't have fallen more than a foot or two...
It's fifty years later, and I still see all the details in my mind's eye. Talk about creating an impression....
