My neighbor John used to own a bike shop and has been active with Rotary and also with the Working Bikes Cooperative. They've been shipping rehabbed bikes all over the world.
The Working Bike guys can fix just about anything, and if they can't fix it, they'll scavenge the bike for parts. A lot of people around here will throw out old bikes at the curb for the waste hauler to pick up. The metal scrappers who drive around the day before garbage pickup usually get them, but s sometimes I beat them to it and grab the bike first and bring it home if I happen to see one when I'm out for a walk or in my car doing errands. I call John and he comes over to pick up the bike and take it to the WBC drop-off site at a local bike shop.
