I now know that was not a lot of cotton to pick. It was enough to keep me out of the house and teach me the value of work. It also put a little money in my pocket, which was fun.
I still remember the singing of the black people that were picking to feed their families. It was blues and it was beautiful. I

We were paid anywhere from 30 to 90 cents a pound, depending on the size and abundance of berries. The baskets were 10lbs. We usually picked 6-8 baskets a day. Of course this was in the early 90s and I was a young teen, so it was enough. I can’t imagine doing it to earn a living though.

Half days and two weeks was plenty. Of course I can garden all day in my own yard, lol.

They told me that they’d avoid jobs like this in favor of jobs that paid more on piece - so much a pound, so much a basket, etc. they learned to be smart and fast and a really fast guy could make $30/hr.

Not for long though - the work was hell on their bodies and the smart ones moved to construction.
